I mostly leave it on the mini but its nice to have options. The nice thing is that I have 3 older Macs that use TB1 and TB2 and I can move the eGPU between them as needed.
Note I also use the set-eGPU script to set apps to use the eGPU and this really helps as well.

I do photoshop and Final Cut as also and get very good few minute render times vs the HD4000 which could take hours. The machine overall gets 11486 or so on Geekbench 4. I will say that with this 2012 Mac mini 2.3 i7 16GB 2 500 SSD and the EGPU RX 580 8GB I am getting 120800+ on the Geekbench for graphics on the eGPU via TB1! I run 2 monitors. Also if you have not bought A video card the AMD Rx580 is great For about $200 but the Vega 64 (much more expensive) will have much more power.

About 4 weeks ago I took the plunge and I upgraded to Catalina and re-ran the wonderful purge-wrangler. Mojave was stable And I used this Setup for about 9 months resisting upgrades to Catalina as I loved and didn’t want to Loose the eGPU via upgrade. The moment the RX 580X hit my Sonnet box ALL the issues stopped. This decision made the world of difference. Seeing that this was the Apple Developer model I decided to try picking a box and card supported by Apple and connect it to the Thunderbolt 1 mini. I tried older R9 390X and other cards and while I got them working on Mojave they seemed to crash.įor you and the entire forum I would strongly recommend the Sonnet eGFX breakaway box and the AMD RX 580 8GB.
In doing the eGPU I initially had issues when I was trying to use non-standard not supported by Apple but Supported in the eGPU scripts components. I was running Mojave for about a year and I have just upgraded to Catalina and have 10.15.4 now running perfectly with my eGPU. I bought the extra holder and added the second drive bay so there are 2 SSDs. basically the most powerful GPU you can use is Radeon RX 560 4GB or Radeon Pro WX 5100 8GB (but this one is expensive and I read about problems using it as eGPU on Macs) it has to have the little fan attached to workĪkyga power supply 6.0A 72W (5.5 x 2.5 mm barrel plug) it can be also found as mLogic mLink which is basically the same logic board they are quiet useless now so sellers often accept offers they can be found on eBay for relativelty cheap.
